Think You Have Been Injured Due To Someone Else’s Negligence? Here Are Five Things To Do In The Initial Moments After The Accident.

Posted on: February 6th, 2017

ChecklistAccidents happen. They are part of life. However, there are many people who have fallen victim to an accident due to the fault of another. The justice system affords these victims opportunities to recover damages based on another person or entity’s degree of fault. Often times, however, people are left wondering what to do immediately following an accident.

For example, say you are driving. Through no fault of your own, another car runs a stop sign and T-bones the passenger side of your car.

Assuming you are capable, here are five things you can do immediately after this to help your potential personal injury claim:

5 Things to Do Immediately Following An Accident to Help Your Personal Injury Claim

1. Document the scene and your injuries by taking photographs and/or videos.

This will provide the best evidence of how the scene, and yourself, appeared at the time of the accident.

2. Call the police and obtain a police report.

If there is damage to either you or your property, be sure to call the police and request that a report be generated. Also be sure to obtain the identity of the responding police officer(s).

3. Exchange information with the other driver.

This also includes obtaining insurance information from the other driver. However, avoid admitting anything to the other driver, even if you feel “guilty.” Of course, you should make sure the other person is okay. However, in the event you decide to pursue a claim, it is best to say as little as possible to the other driver, even if you are entirely without fault.

4. Obtain information from any witnesses at the scene.

Collecting information from accident witnesses can be incredibly important if you ultimately choose to pursue a personal injury case. This includes obtaining their identities, any photos they may have, and any statements about the accident they are willing to share.

5. Seek medical treatment if necessary.

Often times, the shock of an initial accident will delay the onset of pain. If you feel as though you may have been injured as a result of the accident, it is best to obtain medical treatment as early as possible.
