Spring showers can create hazardous conditions on the roadways for inattentive drivers. When snow and ice melts after a long Upstate New York winter, many drivers may be lulled into a false sense of security on the roadways. However, a wet road can be just as dangerous as an icy road.
Avoiding Accidents When Driving on Wet Roads
There are a number of steps you can take to stay safe on the roadways in wet weather:
Adjust speed to the driving conditions
The posted speed limit may not be a reasonable speed limit to drive when you factor in wet road conditions. Drive responsibly and adjust your speed to accommodate the current driving conditions.
Avoid using cruise control
Due to the risk of hydroplaning, you should not use cruise control when you’re driving in rainy conditions or on wet roadways. Having your car on cruise control can make hydroplaning more dangerous, as your car will continue to try to maintain the same speed even as you are losing traction.
Keep your eyes on the road
Visibility can be limited in rainy conditions, or when glare coming off of wet roadways is particularly bad. While it’s always important to keep your eyes on the road, it’s especially important to be alert and aware of potential hazards when melting snow and standing water may be present.
Another important thing to look out for during this time of year is potholes. They can pop up where you least expect them, so keeping an eye out for them is key. Swerving to avoid potholes or hitting potholes can be dangerous, both for you and for those you’re sharing the road with.
Avoid sudden movements and direction changes
Wet roads can be dangerous and slippery, just as icy roads are. When roads are wet and snow melt is present, it’s important to make smooth lane changes and avoid sharp, fast turns at all costs. You want to do what you can to avoid having your vehicle slide out of control.
Check your vehicle before heading out
Drivers should always make sure to check that their windshield wipers and lights are functioning properly before heading out on the roadways. Tire pressure and treads should also be checked on a regular basis either by a reputable car service station or at home.
To test your tire treads at home, place a penny into the groove of a tire tread, pointing the top of Lincoln’s head into the tread. If you can still see Lincoln’s head, the tires should be replaced immediately.
Tips to Avoid Hydroplaning
As mentioned above, another concern when driving in wet weather is hydroplaning. Hydroplaning refers to the loss of braking or steering control in a vehicle when a layer of water prevents direct contact between the tires of the vehicle and the roadway. It can be extra dangerous if you are using cruise control.
If you are operating a vehicle that begins to hydroplane, it is recommended that you remain calm, hold the steering wheel firmly and gradually lift off the accelerator. Slamming on the brakes or yanking the steering wheel will make the situation even more hazardous.

The above practices can protect you, your passengers, and other drivers in wet weather conditions. Failing to drive cautiously and responsibly in wet conditions can result in car accidents that may cause serious injuries.
