Pool Safety Tips

Posted on: August 3rd, 2015

Swimming PoolAfter a long, cold winter, it’s time to have some fun in the sun. Public and private swimming pools are open for the season and families are flocking to them to enjoy the beautiful weather and cool off during the long hot summer days.

While spending the summer poolside is a great option, there are some unfortunate dangers that come along with pool use. Pools are common areas for slip and fall accidents, and other types of incidents that can result in personal injury or death.

This year, keep your little ones safe at the pool by remembering these swimming pool safety tips:

  • Make sure there is a barrier that is at least four (4) feet tall surrounding the pool with a self-closing/self-latching gate. This will help to prevent children from entering the pool area unattended.
  • Supervise your children while they are swimming. Kids should never swim alone. Even strong swimmers should have adult supervision.
  • Enroll your kids in swimming lessons. It’s important for all swimmers to learn the basics.
  • Test the chemicals in your pool regularly.
  • Create, discuss and enforce pool rules.
  • Make sure the entire family knows what to do in the event of an emergency.
  • Point out where water safety and first-aid supplies are stored.
