Car Accidents Caused by Sun Glare

Man driving with the visor down to avoid sun glareMost people have, at some point in their lives, experienced how blinding the sun can be if its rays shine directly into your eyes. This can be especially problematic when you are behind the wheel of a car.

There are a number of factors that can make driving into the sun – an already difficult driving scenario – worse. These factors include driving on a street running east and west, sun glare from any snowfall, dirt and grime accumulations on your windshield, and light-colored dashboards.

The chances of encountering dangerous sun glare conditions are heightened in fall and winter when the trees have fewer leaves on them and the sun sets earlier in the evening.

Despite the fact that the position of the sun is not something the ordinary motorist can control, the New York Court of Appeals has determined that sun glare is not a valid excuse for a motor vehicle accident, especially one with a pedestrian.

Avoiding Car Accidents Caused by Sun Glare

Although you may not be able to control the position of the sun, there are a number of precautions you can take to prevent the sun from causing an accident.

  • Utilize polarized sunglasses, which help to reduce glare from the sun.
  • Use your vehicle’s visor or wear a brimmed hat to prevent the sun from shining directly into your eyes.
  • Leave more space between yourself and other drivers on the road to help prevent accidents caused by sudden stops.
  • Drive with your headlights on to enhance your visibility to other drivers who may be battling sun glare as well.
  • Take care of your windshield by making sure it is clean inside and out, as well as free from cracks and dings.
  • If you find that your visibility is limited because of the glare, try to follow the lines on the side of the road to guide you ensure that you stay in your lane.
